The Institut du Cancer de Montpellier (ICM) is a private healthcare establishment of public interest (ESPIC) offering state-approved public hospital services. It is the reference healthcare centre for the region in the field of cancer research and care for cancer sufferers.

In July 2015, the ICM launched a project to modernise its digital dictation system in replacement of an ageing and stagnant system integrated within its computerised patient files (DPIs). The ICM opted for the Philips SpeechExec Enterprise SDK solution, which offers all the advantages of an easy to integrate and potentially progressive system.

Following a few tests conducted by the ICM's IT department to qualify the solution, the project to integrate the system was entrusted to Oceatech, a company based in Toulouse, in September 2015. In concertation with the ICM, Oceatech was to integrate the Philips SpeechExec Enterprise SDK system within the DPI Crossway patient files, managed by Maincare, the main aim of integration being to ensure perfect identity vigilance for each medical report dictated by a physician. In April 2016, the integration conducted by Oceatech was validated by the ICM and an experimental phase was launched for a small group of users. The experiment was in turn validated in September 2016 and the system's integration permanently approved by the ICM for immediate implementation among its 200 physicians and 70 medical secretaries.

After using the system for four months, Laurent Gaubert from the ICM's IT department offers the following review, 'The implementation of the Philips SpeechExec Enterprise system has met with total success, both from the user's point of view, since the system was immediately adopted by our physicians and secretaries, and from a technical point of view, for it perfectly meets the IT department's demands in terms of integration and identity vigilance.' Furthermore, since it was formally brought into service, around 12,500 dictations have been processed per month, with an average report transcription time estimated at half a day.

The system has already proved its worth and Laurent Gaubert is looking into the next phases of the project, 'We hope to provide our physicians with a mobile dictation solution since they presently only dictate via the Philips SpeechMike which is connected to the DPI (patient's medical file); the challenge being to propose a level of integration that is equivalent to the SpeechMike but using a mobile dictaphone or a Smartphone.'

The ICM is also considering voice recognition, as Laurent Gaubert confirms, 'With help from Oceatech, we are conducting a feasibility study for the use of voice recognition at the ICM. Just like the digital dictation project, we want to start by validating the technical aspects, then to set up a pilot system for use by certain interested users.'

The implementation of the Philips SpeechExec Enterprise system has met with total success, since the system was immediately adopted by our physicians and secretaries and it perfectly meets the IT department's demands in terms of integration and identity vigilance.
