Dictation 2010-style

What will people want from their digital dictation devices in the year 2010?
Philips carried out a study into user requirements to find out.

Top of the list were reliability and user-friendliness followed by improved data protection, faster performance and wireless solutions.

Philips has responded to these findings with the DPM 9600 dictation device, incorporating the world's first computer-free docking station. The device, according to Manfred Hörndl, Business Development Director at Philips Speech Processing, makes sending files to transcribers “an absolute breeze”.

Security features of the DPM 9600 include password protection, real-time data encryption and user identification via PIN and PUK. Download times are down by 40% while battery life is significantly increased thanks to Smart Power Management, which also enables fast battery charging via USB or electric socket. New DSS Pro compression standard delivers unrivalled speech quality: tests with speech recognition software detected virtually no difference in the recognition rates between compressed and uncompressed speech.

Wireless file transfer is the next step, says Hörndl, though obstacles remain before data integrity and ease of use can be guaranteed.

"The most important requirement for professional dictation users is the ability to record and send dictations quickly and easily," says Hörndl. “In meeting this need the DPM 9600 is a major step into the future of dictation. In my thirty years of working at Philips, this is the best dictation device that's ever been developed.”
